Ilja Volkov
Ilja is a young boy featured in the world X, most notably as a part of group X, a group of young children. Ilja originally appears as a timid and nervous boy who depends on his best friend Rosemarie and doesn't speak almost at all, resulting in other children thinking he is not good with the language just yet. Later on Ilja turns out to be a completely different person as everyone thought: determined, rebellious leader type who stubbornly keeps his promises and goes out of his way to prove his worth as a leader to people. Although he later on might come across as arrogant, he genuinely wants nothing but good to people. Ilja treats Karl and Thomas like his own brothers and is especially protective of Thomas.
AppearanceAs Ilja is still young, he doesn't have very noticeable physical features. He is of an average height for a boy his age and has a slim, somewhat androgynous frame. However, he is often seen wearing baggy clothes or multiple layers of clothing, making him look slightly larger than he actually is. He is first seen wearing an over-sized brown sweater with sleeves over his arms, a brown had and dark brown pants partially stuffed inside his black boots. He later changed his trademark clothes to a light brown collared cotton shirt and a long jacket.
Ilja has a cream blond hair, first seen as overgrown and unkept but later on he cuts it shorter and neater. He has gray blue eyes with very dark eyelashes and a permanent narrow in his eyes, making him look somewhat arrogant. His nose is small and pointy, his skin light with permanent red shade on his cheeks, around his eyes and on his nose. His ears are large but not so that people would point it out or make fun of him for that. Ilja originally appears with timid gestures and distressed or nervous expressions, but gradually gains confidence until his gestures and expressions have done an almost 180 degree turn to more confident and determined. |

Personality
On the first glance, Ilja appears to be a silent and somewhat timid young boy who has isolated himself from others and needs to be pushed around to do anything. Although it’s true Ilja has later become like this, it’s not his true nature and instead something he slipped into in order to protect himself.
Due to his circumstances, Ilja distances himself from others. His overgrown hair and baggy clothes too big for him, accompanied by his timid gestures and distressed expressions, make him seem very unapproachable and a bit of a pushover. He is insecure about many things and finds not dealing with them at all, instead pushing everyone away and dwelling into his sadness, way easier. Given his circumstances this is an understandable way of behaving, but most certainly not healthy. Ilja has a need to not bring attention to himself when he is suffering and considering how much is going on in his life during the time he acts this way, it’s easy to see why he would seem like a different person on a daily basis.
By nature, however, Ilja is a very lively and intelligent boy, surprisingly mature and responsible for his age. He is very practical and strong for someone of his stature, and his intelligence and ability to pick up small things are something especially adults shouldn’t underestimate. Ilja is very much a jack-of-all-trades, knowing a bit of all and generally doing well at seemingly everything. He is also very much aware of this, and although it’s not his intention, he might come off as boastful and arrogant. And although he doesn’t voice it, even he considers himself to be mature for his age, sometimes resulting in underestimating his peers and challenging adults.
Although he might come across as a little haughty, he is very well aware of his position as someone other kids follow and even look up to. He is very responsible and treats it as his job to make sure everyone gets along and problems within the group are solved peacefully and fairly. He has a strong sense of right and wrong without going to extremes, and he can go to great lengths to demonstrate his skills as a fair leader. Some people might see this as a foolish recklessness and very much unnecessary, but Ilja places great importance to make sure to show others his “justice” and that he is worthy of being treated as a leader.

Past
Born in a country in north, Ilja was the only child of a well-educated middle class family. He received a good education and lived a fairly comfortable life, being able to attend both higher society but also freely adventure on his own in the wide forests like a commoner. From early on he learned to defend himself from the possible dangers lurking in both higher societies and in the woods. Due to his practical nature and curiosity, Ilja has practiced using whatever he can just lay his hands on as a weapon. He used to be taught knife fight by a mysterious man in exchange of running information gathering errands for him.
As a result from being from a good family and having an open and honest personality, Ilja used to have a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. He was known as a good natured trickster and especially other boys often looked up to him, usually making the ringleader of other local kids especially in afterschool activities of playing outside. He was reckless and often a little too daring but this was just all the more to make other kids look up to him and respect him. However, his parents were caught in publishing illegal and banned books and as result the government shot them in public as a punishment and a warning example to everyone else. Ilja was not supposed to see this but he escaped to watch his parents being publicly executed. He was only 12. |
Although this left him with deep scars, as watching your parents killed would affect almost anyone, but a deep resolution for revenge was also born from inside him. He did not know how nor when he could do this, but he vowed he would do something and a hatred towards his own country was born at that moment. However, he was also overcome with great sadness nobody seemed to notice.
In fear of something bad happening to Ilja as a result of his parents’ public execution, he was sent to his uncle who lived abroad. Although he loved Ilja dearly and like he was his own son, he was not particularly good at taking care of children: he didn’t know how to dress up a child or what exactly they needed. Ilja, now in a foreign country and far away from his friends and previous home, had become more silent and passive in order to heal his own wounds caused by the tragedy in his home country. He let his uncle dress him up as a he pleased and didn’t particularly bother with his looks either. His puberty also starting to kick in, he found his voice weird and became almost completely silent.
Sad and emotionally unstable, Ilja started school in this new country. He was very capable with the language and understood it almost perfectly but he was insecure of his own spelling. He didn’t really make friends at school as he was so occupied with dealing with his own problems and staying away from others in fear of getting hurt. However, Rosemarie, a tomboyish and gorgeous girl from his class seemed to set her eyes on him and befriended him. Ilja tried to push her away at first but Rosemarie was stubborn and they eventually started bonding, Ilja slowly learning to open up to her little by little. Although he still found himself too insecure to really be himself, he found enough courage to talk about his past a little with Rosemarie.

Other
- Ilja had a good education when he was living in his home country, but he is now attending a very common school. At first he is too sad to really bother with studies and he was seemingly dragging behind, but as his confidence built with his new friend group, he started catching up on his studies again and became one of the tops of his class.
- He is not a big bookworm but he does enjoy talking about the books he has read. He also has interested in talking about things more deeply, and he enjoys having discussions of more philosophical nature especially with Thomas despite their age difference. Partially because Ilja likes to boast off with his own theories, but also because he genuinely respects Thomas as a conversation partner and finds his thoughts interesting especially for a child so young.
- Ilja is partially based on Cinderella story trope due to his seemingly big transformation from silent and shabby to a strong willed leader
- Rosemarie is his best friend and they wear matching red ribbons as a sign of friendship
