Saber (Fortinbras)
Saber is a fan character based on Fortinbras from Hamlet and he was made for the Fate franchise by Type-Moon. Fortinbras is a Saber-class Servant featured in Fate/Reflection and his Master is an alternative universe version of Karen. From the first glance he can be seen as somewhat of a confusing person, differentiating between a naive airhead and a battle-hardened warrior prince. However, in Saber class the young man easily balances out both sides of his nature and uses them for his advance when making allies, friends and negotiating. Just as he can be cruel and cold blooded in a battle, he can also be kind and gentle to people, earning the trust of many soldiers in his previous life.
AppearanceFortinbras appears as a young man of average height. His body is very slim with his shape being very straight and without any noticeable features. His arms, back and chest are the most muscular parts of him despite not showing very well. Typical for people living in the far north, his complexion is rather pale and the freckles on his face show very noticeably against his light skin.
He has blue, bright eyes with eye corners pointing up slightly, resembling cat a little. His lips are red and his cheeks and nose tend to be slightly red even when he is not blushing. His hair is light brown and brushed on his right partially covering his right eye. He is shown to swipe his hair completely away from his eyes when he is in a battle. Fortinbras is shown wearing a blue-red-white army-styled uniform with a red sash-like object with white sides going from his right shoulder to his left waist. Multiple medals and pins featured on his sash. On his waist he has a brown belt made for his sword hanging on his left size. He is mainly featured with a white half-cape with a fur end hanging from his left shoulders but he is also shown with a full cape with a fur-covered hood as well. |

Personality
Primarily Saber is a man who is capable of taking things seriously and also knows when to do so. Especially when summoned he usually puts on a colder and more serious front in order to make clear he is ready to fight for the Grail for his Master. However, because of the cruelty he has seen in his life, he tries not to become cynical by acting more goofy than he is and often gives in to everything that just gives him joy - fighting included. Saber usually softens up very fast to his Master and the people he deems trustworthy and gladly lets people see his less serious side.
A certain kind of intensivity follows Saber wherever he goes and whatever he does: he is prone to finishing his job as perfectly and intensively as possible even if the outcome was not worth it. He thinks half-assing things is the same as not doing the thing at all. Saber is also known to be very impulsive risk-taker and he often acts before he thinks due the fact he trust his luck and gut feeling greatly (and usually his luck doesn’t betray him). Saber never denies a challenge, even if it was disadvantageous for him. He can also be fair and chivalrous to the fault, going as far as revealing his class to an enemy simply because he felt like he owed it for learning the enemy’s class by accident. He thinks highly of other Servants by default simply because they are heroic spirits, his respect based on the fact all those people had to do something significant to become ones.
In contrast to his impulsive and hot-blooded nature, Saber is often described as tender and good hearted. He is very kind towards people and doesn’t think of others badly very easily. And while he might not be the best at reading people at all times, he tries very hard. It’s not coincidence his army was ready to follow him even to the most riskiest of battles: he has a way with people and it most likely has a lot to do with his very genuine nature. When comfortable, he likes teasing those he likes. Saber’s way of teasing is very friendly, however, and it takes a special kind of person to actually feel offended by Saber’s teasing.
Saber is also more thoughtful than he might look: he does have many interesting and well thought out opinions and thoughts to voice but he often prefers not getting involved in such matters. He sometimes even purposefully presents himself as more simple than he is.
Although a fictional hero, Saber doesn’t seem to mind the fact he was never a real person the least bit.

Stats and Noble Phantasm
Strength: A
Endurance: B
Agility: B
Mana: C
Luck: B*
Noble Phantasm: A
Saber’s Noble Phantasm is “Crown of Norway”, an Anti Unit (Self) Reality Marble. It can trap a Servant of any rank within it with no escape. It also gives Saber a boost in strength and speed. While this Noble Phantasm in itself doesn’t do damage to the opponent, it gives such a strong boost to Saber and forces the opponent to a close combat that his chance of winning are extremely high.
Upon launching his NP, Saber’s appearance changes: his clothes turn more detailed yet still practical for a battle, his cape changes to a full cape with Denmark’s emblem on the back of it and a crown appears on his head.
During the NP launch the opponent is forced in a limited space by the Army of Norway: each and every one of them being soldiers Fortinbras traveled together with in his life. Each of them receives a rank higher than that of the opponent so that the opponent won’t be able to make their way through the circle formed by the soldiers. Fortinbras then receives a boost in his speed and strength from his own soldiers, symbolizing their trust and respect for their prince and captain.
TL;DR his soldiers trap you and then proceed to cheer for their prince who is now fighting against you in a ring formed by the soldiers. The soldiers drum and blow horns and in general it’s a good time for everyone but the target of this NP.
* Fortinbras has a higher luck rank than generally those of Saber class. This is due to his original story where he is told to be able to win battles that seem hopeless for him and he ends up being in the right place at the right time very often.

Identity/Past
Saber’s identity is Fortinbras, the Prince of Norway. Although he doesn’t appear many times in the play Hamlet, he is referred throughout the story and acts as a counterpart/parallel and foil for the protagonist, Hamlet.
After arriving to Denmark and seeing the bloody scene, the prince regrets arriving too late and is saddened by the scenery. However, as he originally planned to invade Denmark anyway, he has no reason to decline the Prince of Denmark’s last words of making Fortinbras the new king. Watching Hamlet’s lifeless body, Fortinbras vowed to rule the kingdom well and prevent another tragedy like this taking place on the grounds of Denmark.
Eventually he became the king of both Norway and Denmark and, although hotheaded, the countries under his rule were doing well and he managed to do a lot good and keep the economy good. However, because Fortinbras preferred ruling from Norway instead of Denmark, the Danes eventually got tired of the king not being present. A very small rebellion was formed among those who were not pleased with the way their king ruled (or rather, the fact their king was not a Dane), and when Fortinbras next time visited the kingdom, he was assassinated; impaled with a sword from behind. As the chaos broke, it’s said that the last words of the king were ”… in the end, despite my vows, I couldn’t end the tragedy. Please forgive me”
He died at the age of 20.
- Although Fortinbras makes only two brief appearances in the later half of the play, he is referred to throughout: King Claudius sends ambassadors to Norway in the hopes of staving off his invasion, and they return with the news that Fortinbras will attack Poland but leave Denmark alone. At the very end—after all the major characters except Horatio are dead—Fortinbras and his army enter, accompanied by ambassadors from England who have come to announce that Claudius’ supposed orders to execute Rosencrantz and Guildenstern have been carried out. With the throne of Denmark now vacant, Fortinbras is to be crowned ruler.
Fortinbras also serves as a parallel to Hamlet in many ways: like the latter, he is motivated largely by the death of his father, whose name he also bears (as Hamlet does his), and both serve as princes of their respective countries. In other respects, Fortinbras serves as a foil for Hamlet: while the Danish prince is deliberate and given to long-winded soliloquies, the Norwegian is impulsive and hot-headed, determined to avenge his slain father at any cost.
