Kielo
Kielo is a vetehi living in the river Torne that marks as a border between Finland and Sweden. She is a relatively peaceful vetehi who doesn’t usually need to resort in eating humans thanks to the river full of salmon. Kielo is independent and wise, but rarely shares her wisdom as she has an interest in people only as an observer. She usually doesn’t prefer to talk to anyone and enjoys her life of very little socializing. Her brother visits her once every two year to share news from around the Nordic waters.
Kielo has an extremely good memory. But as she is very vengeful this also means she will remember if you hurt her or disrespect the water - and she has drowned more than just a couple of fishermen and swimmers as a punishment for doing so. During winter she prefers moving to southern waters due to how deep the water tends to freeze, but depending on the year and cold she might also remain somewhere in the river. AppearanceKielo is an average sized vetehi, roughly 6 meters tall and her human part around the same size of an average human. She has a pure white skin and her scales’ base colour is very light cream with with second layer slightly darker cream white and then the topmost layer grayish pink. Her upper body has little to no scales with only her shoulders covered. She has blue eyes with white and full eyelashes and some red colour around the eyes. Her hair is light and a mixture of blond and very light brown and she usually keeps it on a long pony tail, but can be seen with open hair too. Her back spike starts from her back and goes all the way to her tail tip.
As an arctic vetehi, her scales have something akin to frost covering them and glittering in light. They do not melt during summer. She has decorated her scales with a few rather common but round-ish rocks found from the sea. |

Personality
Unlike her social brother, Kielo is a somewhat reserved and shy vetehi who prefers solitude. She has a great appreciation for nature and sceneries, and being surrounded by the rich and almost untouched nature of Lapland is everything she has ever wished to have in her life. Even so, Kielo isn’t antisocial and is a surprisingly good conversationalist when she just wants to be. She usually comes across as mysterious to others, and also likes herself to be fancied as one.
Due the fact she can get all her food she needs from the river, Kielo is not very interested in seducing and eating humans. She enjoys observing humans, but especially now as older rarely seeks any contact with them. Kielo is, however, known to save children from drowning if there has been nobody else to help the child. She has a soft spot for children regardless of their species, and only eats younglings only if she has no other mean of survival.
Kielo easily feels overwhelmed by the beauty of things, and although it’s usually targeted towards nature, she can also find beauty in animals and humans. She can sometimes get fixated over things she likes and is known to stalk people she deems worthy of her time, but she is very respectful and usually doesn’t even show herself to anyone.
She is mature and reserved, and usually carries herself with dignity. Kielo is very particularly knowledgeable of how to hunt and live near the water, and she knows a lot about fish, birds and plants that she can see from the water. As her memory is also very good, she usually knows quite a lot about the history of the areas where she has been living for long enough time. However, her memory also holds a more vengeful side as she also remembers the faces of people who do wrong to her, the nature or to someone she cares for. She knows no mercy when you get on her bad side, and will immediately proceed to drown and kill the person. Kielo usually doesn’t even eat these victims, and only does it if she has been starving.
There is certain kind of distrust in Kielo’s nature, and she usually prefers doing everything by herself and hates asking help from others. She also doesn’t want to dote on others, and in that aspect she can get unnecessarily proud and stubborn. However, she also has a softer side and enjoys complimenting others (as well as getting compliments) and she can get very motherly with people who depend on her.

Past
Kielo was born in Bothnian Bay, the northernmost part of the Baltic Sea. She and her brother Lumi lived peacefully with their parents, but after a while got bored of the constant hiding from humans and other sea creatures. With the first world war also causing some disturbance in the seas, Kielo and her brother left their home very young and moved on to northern water areas, eventually settling in Torne river.
Life was peaceful and eventually the siblings associated with some humans, usually exchanging stories to learn more about the life of land. Kielo was always more distrustful of humans compared to her brother Lumi, and usually preferred listening next to her brother instead of actively participating in the conversations.
During the second world war the siblings preferred to stay out of the war’s way and habited areas with a relative peace. Lumi eventually got bored of staying in one place, and in hopes of seeing more and meeting more creatures, he left Torne river, only visiting Kielo once every two years to share stories of his adventures.
Kielo was still a young adult in vetehi terms when she was left alone, and she was still very curious. She would occasionally involve herself with humans she personally seemed trustworthy, helping them out with small things once in awhile in exchange of food or jewels. During this time Kielo developed a liking for decorating herself and she started making her hoard of jewels and other shiny things she received from others or found from the water. Kielo was also lucky in a way her encounters with humans never ended up getting violent, even if she did give a frighten to some people she had thought of interesting.
A very special part in Kielo’s life was when she rescued a young man whose boat turned over as a result of a storm. She had seen the man when he was still a young boy as he loved to swim and fish near the area where Kielo resided back then. Kielo decided to save him because she had always found him very respectful towards the water and its inhabitants, sometimes even leaving Kielo a fish or two as he was very superstitious and believed a spirit resided in the water.
After saving him, the two of them became friends and eventually had feelings for each other. However, they knew it was not possible for them to become a pair due to their differences. It was the first time Kielo felt jealousy towards humans, hoping she would have been a human herself instead of a vetehi. Heartbroken and sad, Kielo left the area and the man, never to return during his time of life. She wandered around for years, and when she finally returned to the area again, generations had passed but the story of a water spirit living in the water still lived on.
Kielo then met the granddaughter of the man he had loved. Out of sentimentality and guilt for leaving the man without a word, Kielo gave the girl advice and taught her the secrets of waters and fishing. After the girl reached adulthood, Kielo decided it was her time to leave.
She has since then been residing mostly in the Torne river between Tornio and Pello, although she has also lived in the northernmost parts of the river as well during some summers. During winters she usually prefers going south, even as far as returning to the Baltic Sea during the coldest years.
